Description
Talking to a patient about a tumour and the therapy (be it a surgery, chemo or radiation) always elicits the same question: “Will I lose my hair? I’ll no longer be able to set foot outside… who knows what people will say... I’ll no longer be myself...”
Ever since we started our profession as doctors, much has changed. At the beginning of the 80’s, during our first rounds in the wards, our “Masters” would never utter the word tumour or chemotherapy; there used to be a tacit agreement between doctors and relatives to keep the disease hidden and conceal it from our female patients, who could figure out only from collateral effects that they were stricken by “cancer”.
Today communication has changed: we speak of the illness, we explain the side effects of treatment, we can draw from plenty of supporting drugs to shrink their effects, but the query is always: “Will I lose my hair? Will I identify myself...”.
We got an inspiration many years ago: make-up and attention to beauty have roots in time. However, it’s only recently that the right balance was found and a multi-disciplinary project was born: Salute Allo Specchio (Mirror Your Health) is an initiative that bands together, in a hospital, for a common goal, cancer specialists, psychologists beauticians, make-up artists, image experts, volunteers.
The target is not only the embellishment of the tunnel to make the patient feel more comfy or fabricate fiction making believe she’s still pretty even when bald: the target is to make esthetic intervention a part and parcel of the therapy for the patient.
“The hospital is no longer the place where I undergo “therapy”, but some place with people who take care of me and let me keep on living.”
Thanks to all those who work with a sense of commitment and dedication in this project and to all the awesome women who allow us to look after them, with trust and hope!
